Soccer Mom

It had to come to this. It's an admission of sorts.

I AM A SOCCER MOM.

That's right, a soccer mom. I have two kids, mini-van, Thursday/Friday night practices and Saturday morning games. I drink my way-too-expensive coffee on the side-lines and quietly applaud the "efforts" of our children because "we don't keep the score of the game!"

I am not complaining about my title during the fall. I enjoy soccer and am glad that my kids want to play a sport that really does require some skill and physical stamina. It's just that there a few things that I would change about the suburban game of soccer...

Do you know what I want to do?

  • I want to yell at the game. I want to tell my kiddos to hustle and be aggressive (not assertive) and not feel that I have severely abused my children and led them down the road to therapy ("Well Doctor, I am here because when I was 6 my Mom cheered too loudly at my pee-wee soccer game!").
  • I want my kids to know that there are winners and losers in the game and show them how to react when they experience both. It's okay to lose and okay to win. Wouldn't this help prepare them how to handle disappointment as well as successes?
  • And Oh how I would love to get rid of my mini-van!
Better run for now. There is a "soccer star on board" sticker that needs to be affixed to the back hatch of the van!!!
